POTW #12 - Dodie Clark

17:17:00

Dodie Clarke or 'doddleoddle' is a highly understated YouTuber who I mentioned in this post. She writes songs about love and adolescence and more. She finds emotion in unlikely places and her sentimentality makes for some beautiful songs. This weeks POTW isn't available on Spotify but you can find my YouTube playlist of the following songs here.

Sick of Losing Soul Mates

This is one of Dodies newest songs and if you listen to this compared to some of her older songs you can really see the growth. It's about trying to remain friends with an ex who saved her from an abusive relationship but Dodie explains it better in this video. It's beautifully written and gently thought provoking about a mature sense of love. I particularly love the imagery of this song, her dark room and the darkness of her love is somehow represented in the musical accompaniment.

One for The Road

Next is a more upbeat "fuck you" love song. It's totally a feel good sing along tune that could be directed at an ex immature best friend as well as some fuck boy you were (nearly) with.

She

This may be Dodies most popular original song. It's about confusion and sexuality, innocence and infatuation. Dodie herself identifies as bisexual and this song really portrays a truth that's often over looked. Despite being about sexuality it is also about falling for a friend so has a universal appeal which might be why it has over 1 million views. It's such a dainty song that's packed with emotion.

Down

Depression, that's all Down is about. Just listen please.

Adored by Him

Like she, Adored by Him is about an unrequited love. I can vouch that this song sums up every emotion involved with falling for a friend. This song is honestly one of the most beautifully written songs purely for its use of language. Honestly, Adored By Him is incredible.

Pas De Deux

Dodie wrote this song for the charity Rise Above about overcoming abusive relationships. Tenderly and beautifully written.

Novels

This is a cover of a song Dodie herself has described as one of her favourite songs of all time. Personally, I prefer this version to the original. The songs lack of conventional structure just adds to the appeal of this gorgeous track. It's lyrics really are something to behold -

"We've got younger faces than our hearts are letting on"

"What if I asked you to stay? What if it cost you, your heart and your last name."

"And when we sleep at night
I hope that we write novels in our heads
Of what to tell the other when we wake.
And when morning comes before we're done
With volumes left to choose
We'll say I love you"

I know these lyrics are down to Rusty and not Dodie but honestly, HONESTLY THIS SONG IS TOO BEAUTIFUL NOT TO WRITE ABOUT AAAHHH.

Pop Party Mash Up 2015

I adore the sisterly aspect of this. The song flows seamlessly and Hedy really has an incredible voice for her age. Perfect to sing along to passionately while you're home alone. Before this song I never really appreciated the depth to Ariana Grande's One Last Time so tyvm Dodie.

Little Room

A sadder song to finish about yet another event in everyone's life that is so often over looked about adolescence. A childhood bedroom holds so so many memories and leaving to achieve more adult accomplishments is a necessity but also a sad occasion.
"I've got to leave the nest,
But I'm Not sure how to fly,"
Is probably one of the best lyrics about growing up I've ever come across. Emotion, sentimentality and fear all jammed into one tiny song.

Those are nine of my favourite Dodie songs and you can listen to them all in this playlist. Thanks for reading and listening!
